Elderly Edenvale man (84) murdered during home invasion

A case of murder is being investigated after the body of an Edenvale man (84) was found at his home.

The body was found during the early hours of the morning on June 23, in the Avenues.

According to the Edenvale SAPS communications officer, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers, a residential burglary was reported to the Edenvale SAPS at 1.30am on Twelfth Avenue.

“Officers arrived at the scene and found an 82-year-old woman with a head injury. Her 84-year-old husband was lying lifeless in the garden outside, also with an injury,” said W/O Olckers.

“Paramedics declared the husband dead at the scene,” he said.

W/O Olckers said the suspects allegedly attempted to break into the home of the couple and that her husband went outside to investigate the noises.

According to the 82-year-old wife, her husband was attacked when he when outside.

The woman told the police that she struggled with one of the suspects but managed to get away. She locked herself in a room and called the police.

W/O Olckers said the SAPS is still waiting for the pathologist’s report to determine the cause of death, however the elderly man did have a head injury.

“No items were taken from the house and the wife was taken to the Tembisa Hospital for treatment. The Edenvale SAPS is investigating the case and appeals to anyone with further information to come forward and contact 011 553-8600,” said W/O Olckers.

“If residents hear a suspicious noise they must not investigate themselves. They should rather contact the police on 10111,” he said.
