Motorist pepper sprayed and arrested for assault following R24 traffic snarl-up
The confrontation with EMPD officers came as a result of a traffic snarl-up caused by an overturned truck.
A motorist was subdued with pepper spray before he was arrested on the R24 highway on Saturday morning.
Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago from the EMPD said the 59-year-old driver was “unbelievably aggressive and rude towards officers”.
The motorist was charged with crimen injuria, assault and resisting arrest at Germiston Police Station.
The confrontation with EMPD officers came as a result of a traffic snarl-up caused by an overturned truck.
“At around 4am on Saturday morning, Â a 10-ton Nissan diesel truck loaded with wood lost control and overturned resulting in closure of lanes and a considerable congestion of traffic.
“One driver in a Polo who broke every rule in the book with regards to traffic and moral issues was arrested following an aggressive rage and spewing of unprintable words directed at officers,” said Chief Supt Kgasago from the EMPD.
“The driver in the white VW Polo with two female passengers disregarded the control measures in place and directions of the metro police officers.
“Warning the driver by sounding sirens and blue lights for him to desist from his wrongdoings fell on deaf ears and the officers were left with only the option of arresting him,” Chief Supt Kgasaso said.
He added that the driver cursed, called officers names and also assaulted them.
“Officers had to use pepper spray to subdue the man,” he said.
The driver is expected to appear in Germiston Magistrate’s Court today.
