EMPD recovers hijacked, stolen cars

All the recovered vehicles were taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni.

A Porsche Cayenne, hijacked in Bedfordview on Saturday, was among five vehicles recovered by members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) this past weekend.

Between Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7, the EMPD Loss Control and Investigations Unit members recovered five stolen and hijacked vehicles in the areas of Tembisa and Kempton Park.

Two vehicles were taken from Midrand, one in Bedfordview, one in Birchleigh North and one in Birch Acres.

The recoveries were a joint effort between the EMPD Loss Control and Investigations Unit and various vehicle tracking companies.

On Friday, a white Audi A4 was hijacked by two armed men in Birchleigh North.

The car was recovered shortly afterwards in Ivory Park Extension 2.

In a second incident on Friday, a Volkswagen Golf GT stolen in Midrand, was recovered on Lewerik Street in Rabie Ridge.

The dashboard was stripped; apparently the thieves were searching for the tracker unit in an effort to render the vehicle untraceable.

On Friday evening, a maroon Toyota Corolla was hijacked in Birch Acres.

The unlucky victim had a wedding to co-ordinate the following day and an expensive wedding dress and five pairs of shoes were in the vehicle.

The hijackers fired a shot through the driver’s window to scare the resisting owner into parting with the vehicle.

The vehicle was recovered after it was found abandoned within minutes of the hijacking in Umbumbulo Street, Birch Acres.

Although the wedding dress was missing, the consolation to the owner was that the five pairs of wedding shoes were recovered.

On Saturday, the EMPD Loss Control Unit members received information from a tracking company that they were pursuing a black Toyota Tazz stolen in Pretoria, heading towards Tembisa.

The Toyota Tazz was recovered after it was found abandoned along Samora Street in Hospital View, Tembisa.

Its ignition was removed and the door locks were damaged.

In a second incident on Saturday, a Porsche Cayenne was hijacked in Bedfordview. The Porsche was recovered in Croydon only minutes later, but the keys were missing.

All the recovered vehicles were taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep pound in Benoni.

Investigations are underway to catch those responsible for the crimes.
