Save the planet before it’s too late

Bedfordview resident, Mrs Ella Bella Constantinides – Leite, has called on residents to start taking the environment seriously before it is too late.

Mrs Constantinides – Leite said people need to remember that every effort, no matter how small, can make a difference in saving the planet.

“We should not be having so much waste sent to landfill sites. Waste should be separated at the source. We are the ones creating the waste and thus we need to make sure we take responsibility and clean up after ourselves,” she said.

She said everyone needs be recycling and making sure the refuse they send to landfill sites is reduced.

“I always urge people to reduce, reuse, recycle and respect. I feel sorry for the informal recyclers who have to go through bins and bags of waste to find recyclable materials. They should not have to do that in the first place. Before throwing your waste in the bin, take the time to separate it accordingly,” said Mrs Constantinides – Leite.

Her passion for the earth has lead Mrs Constantinides – Leite to launch Generation Earth, an organisation that raises awareness about climate change.

Mrs Constantinides – Leite said residents should invest in a decomposing system for their organic waste.

“If all homes can start doing this we won’t have flies and rats because we will be turning our organic waste into compost,” she said.

Mrs Constantinides – Leite said in the near future she hopes the Department of Education will get more involved with Generation Earth.

“My wish is for environmental education to be made part of the syllabus in our schools and for our government to be more decisive as far as climate change is concerned. We cannot convince our youngsters to take up careers in the green economy if the powers that be are unable to make the green economy enticing for them to want to work in. We need to start cleaning up our act as people, it is up to us to save the oceans, our trees and the planet in general,” said Mrs Constantinides – Leite.
