EMPD nab speedsters

"All the individuals who were arrested were charged at the Edenvale police station with reckless and negligent driving. "

The EMPD High Speed Unit conducted a speed law enforcement operation on March 19 and 20.

The operation took place between 5am and 11am on both days along the R24 freeway, at the Edenvale off-ramp, and yielded several arrests.

On Saturday, four drivers were arrested when clocked at speeds of between 161 and 173km/h on the 120km/h stretch of the freeway.

Along with the four speedsters on Saturday, a man was also arrested when he was suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol.

The Sunday operation resulted in eight drivers being arrested for exceeding the speed limit on the same stretch of the freeway. The drivers were caught at speeds of between 162 and 206km/h.

All those arrested were charged at the Edenvale Police Station for reckless and negligent driving.

They were all released after posting bail of R1 000 each.

The suspected drunk driver from Saturday’s operation will face a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
