Jade Nel is the new inspector at the Edenvale SPCA.
Jade started working at Edenvale’s SPCA on March 14 and was previously based at Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA for three years
“I’ve always been around animals,” Jade said.
Jade qualified as a game ranger before she became involved in the SPCA. She has worked in Uganda where she rescued and rehabilitated white rhinos. She also worked at Lions Rock International Welfare.
After Lions Rock International Welfare, Jade started working at the SPCA in Germiston and after three years she left in order to apply for an inspector position in Edenvale. Edenvale is “quiet” compared to Germiston. “It gives you time to be proactive”.
” It is a hard job though. You have to be emotionally strong, never lose your compassion for people or animals and stand your ground, ” said Jade.
“It is a priority to prevent the cruelty of animals.”
As an inspector Jade is often driving around and enforcing the law, however because of this she does not interact with the animals on the same level as that of a caretaker.
She said it is good to be at the office when she can be, as the office has a few four legged visitors. “Having them at the office is nice,” said Jade.
When it comes to animal cruelty Jade believes that a lot of it has to do with “a lack of education” and in some cases a lack of money.
“In comparison Edenvale has less animal cruelty cases than Germiston. Edenvale is very proactive. The public sees the SPCA driving around, which also plays a role in the prevention of animal cruelty,” she said.
