SAPS calls for community assistance

Home owners should invest in gate motor locks to secure it as criminals have figured out a way to steal the motors.

The Edenvale SAPS is calling on members of the public to assist in the fight against crime.

According to the acting communications officer, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers, there were four cases of motor gate theft as well as three house break-ins. He said the community should consider the following in order to avoid being a victim of these criminal acts.

For house break-ins:

  •  Ensure the alarm is always working to its full capacity.
  •  Ensure your security reacts when the alarm sounds.
  •  Request that your security company patrol more often.

For gate motor thefts:

  •  Home owners should invest in gate motor locks to secure it as criminals have figured out a way to steal the motors.
  •  Make use of other mechanisms to limit the chances of the motors being stolen.

For hijackings:

  •  Always be vigilant when driving.
  •  When going home or leaving home, be alert and aware of any suspicious behaviour.
  •  Do not leave valuable items in plain sight.

W/O Oclkers said the SAPS will be having more special operations during this time, however he urges the public to be alert at all times.

“The community, security companies and the Community Police Forum (CPF) must work together to combat crime as they are the eyes out there,” he said.
