JVW Girls School League seeks new players
The trials will be held from today, February 2 to February 29.
After four successful years, the Janine Van Wyk (JVW) Girls School League is once again in search of new talent.
The team currently has 1 800 girls who actively take part in the JVW Girls Schools League.
Lauren Duncan, JVW’s project manager, said the team will host trials at the Bedforview Country Club in a bid to find new players for the team.
The trials will be held from today, February 2 to February 29.
“We are looking for girls between 10 and upwards. As a team, we are passionate about developing young players who can one day represent the country,” said Lauren.
The JVW League was launched in 2012, where only 11 schools and 16 teams took part, setting a standard and a competitive league in which girls in high school could play in. The age groups are U/15, U/17 and Open. JVW Girls Football Development was started by current Banyana captain, Janine Van Wyk, who strives to develop young, aspiring soccer players. After its inception, the numbers grew as more girls became interested in the game.
The JVW team works tirelessly to make sure the league runs smoothly and remains enjoyable.
“JVW organises qualified referees to ref the games to ensure fairness in all games. Passion for the game drives us to continue to help uplift and inspire young girls who aspire to pursue soccer further in life,” said Lauren.
In 2015, JVW hosted the first ever schools league tournament as a curtain raiser to the actual league. It was a way for schools that were not sure of the league to have a glimpse of how the league is run.
“The winner of the tournament was Reddam House Bedfordview. The first runner-up was Edenvale High School and the second runner-up was Assumption Convent. Reddam House Bedfordview also retained their title to be crowned the Winners of the JVW Open Division,” she said.
JVW FC is made up of four club teams, which are the juniors, reserve, first and the vets teams.
The junior team was recently established. The junior team was the only all girls team that played in the boys ELFA League.
“The junior team has grown substantially as a team, despite having to adapt to each other quickly throughout the league. The reserve team is a team that is made up from some of the players scouted from the schools league.
“This team plays in the DSL and Easterns Local Football Association League (EFLA) throughout the year. It then becomes a feeder to the first team. The first team plays in the Sasol League. The team started playing in the Sasol League in 2013 but it has already climbed up the ranks by finishing 11th in 2013, eighth in 2014 and fourth in 2015.
“The first team has worked hard throughout the seasons as they hope to win the league next season. The first team boasts some big names in women’s football, with the likes of Janine Van Wyk, Nompumelelo Nyandeni and Mamello Makhabane (Banyana Banyana) and Gabriela Salgado (SA U/20),” said Lauren.
