#YourStory: Ballet dancer recalls her passion

"It was a pleasure to pursue my dancing dream."

A ballet dancer remembered her best years when travelling the world and bringing home championship titles.

Ms Constance Downhard, a resident at the Edenhaven Retirement Village, said she only remembers wanting to be the best dancer of her time.

“I started with ballet as a junior and entered many competitions and Eisteddfods. I won a trip to London when I won the Eisteddfod,” said Ms Downhard.

She stayed in London for three years, doing only ballet.

When she returned to South Africa, she was asked to leave for Cape Town to enter another dance competition.

“I was told I had to enter. I stayed in Cape Town for two and a half years,” she said.

Her parents called her and said they were happy for her but that she had forgotten her acrobatics.

“My parents wanted me to come home but the team in Cape Town did not want me to leave,” she said.

“My parents always pushed me to dance as much as possible. I am grateful for their support, as it contributed to my career as a dancer.

“Shortly after returning from Cape Town, I grew tired and told them I was done dancing because I had participated in so many competitions. It was a pleasure to pursue my dancing dreams. I miss dancing now and then, and I will treasure those memories forever,” said Ms Downhard.
