Economy forces Little Eden shop to make adjustments

The secondhand shop, situated at the corner of 3rd Street and 8th Avenue in Edenvale, has been a bargain spot for many locals over the years.

The Little Eden secondhand shop has had to adjust prices to keep up with the economy.

The secondhand shop, situated at the corner of 3rd Street and 8th Avenue in Edenvale, has been a bargain spot for many locals over the years, selling a variety of items including furniture, clothing, toys, books, appliances and much more.

The shop is one of many fundraising activities that Little Eden undertakes in order to ensure their family of 300 children and adults with profound intellectual disabilities are cared for all year round.

Ms Nichollette Muthige, the public relations and communications officer for Little Eden, said items sold at the shop are donated to the society by the public.

Some items like suitable clothing, toys and linen, are put aside to be used inside the home for the residents. Other items are sent to their shop and sold to the general public.

“The income received from the operation of the shop is vital to the financial sustainability of the organisation as over R20-million annually has to be raised by the organisation to keep its doors open. More recently, the society had to implement price increments at the shop to keep up with the current global economy,” said Ms Muthige.

She said Little Eden acknowledges and is grateful that some of its donors are unable to contribute financially towards the work of the society and may opt to donate valuable items to the society to assist with fundraising.

“The society encourages its supporters to continue their support of the shop and to help them contribute towards the financial stability of Little Eden,” said Ms Muthige.
