Jeppe Girls are chess champions

Jeppe Girls won the U/18 section for the third consecutive year.

It has been a good term for Jeppe High School for Girls in the game of chess.

The chess teams have been playing in the African Women’s Open Chess Festival, the district finals and the Gauteng games.

All teams have performed well.

The African Women’s Open Chess Festival took place on August 8 and the girls were awarded Overall Best Performing School and commended for their excellent manners and good behaviour.

17 pupils took part in the tournament, playing six rounds.

Shyannie Wu who took first place and was awarded a trophy and a medal. Mohima Vandayar took second place and received a trophy and a medal. Dominique Meysel took fourth place and was awarded a medal and Tafadzwa Makhuza took fifth place and was awarded a medal.

The girls played again on August 17 in the District Chess League Final.

The U/15s won 6-0 and the U/18s won 6-0.

Jeppe Girls won the U/18 section for the third consecutive year. Another victory for Jeppe Girls was the Gauteng Chess Games that took place on Saturday 29 in Pretoria.

Jeppe Girls represented D9 with teams in the U/15 and U/18 categories.

The U/15 team did well and was crowned the girls U/15 Gauteng champions.

The team consisted of six players; Mahima Vandayar, Rethabile Maboko, Nompumelelo Dube, Zamokuhle Gama, Kimberley Mugadza, Kimalda Chetty and Naomi Nakonga who was reserve.

Zamokuhle and Kimberley both won all of their six games. Nompumelelo won four out of six games and Rethabile won three out of five games. Kimalda won three out of four games.

The U/15 team will be representing Gauteng at the Nationals in December in Cape Town.

The U/18 team did well in the Gauteng Games, taking third place.

The team consisted of Dominique Meysel, Nicole Song, Shannie Wu, Minal Srafaz, Tafadzwa Makhuza and Lizan Potgieter, Collectively they won 19½ games out of 30.
