BCPF proposes safety measures

If brought in, the company, which is a non profit organisation, would monitor main roads as well as entry and exit points in Bedfordview.

As part of its proactive approach to fighting crime in the area, the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) has proposed joining powers with the Community Active Patrolling (CAP) group.

If brought in, the company, which is a non profit organisation, would monitor main roads as well as entry and exit points in Bedfordview.

BCPF chairperson, Mr Gavin Henry, said CAP would not be brought in as competition to the many armed response companies already operating in the area, but to take control of public spaces.

“In the suburbs that CAP currently operates, their worst performance is a reduction of violent contact crimes. We truly believe the proactive approach to crime prevention works better than reactive response to crime. However, to do a proper job takes money and we sincerely hope that both businesses and households will see the benefit of such a reduction in crime and help pay for it,” said Mr Henry.

The proposal was made public at a community meeting hosted by the BCPF at Morninghill’s Cornerstone Church last Tuesday.

Ward 20 councillor, Clr Jill Humphreys, supported the proposal saying it will not only assist in restoring safety, but would make Bedfordview a no-go area for criminals.

“We are currently waiting for a business plan from CAP so that we know exactly what to expect, but having them control all the main roads such as Van Buuren, Bradford, Riley, Nicol, Kloof, Boeing and Concord roads could make Bedfordview a no-go area for criminals,” said Clr Humphreys.

CAP’s CEO, Mr Mark Van Jaarsveld, said Bedfordview residents spend about R6-million on security. He asked residents if they see their money’s value.

During the meeting, residents voted, by a show of hands, for CAP to be brought into the area, vowing to support it financially as well.

Mr Van Jaarsveld said his company would work with the BCPF to identify areas for them to launch.
