DA assesses Edenvale SAPS service delivery

"We are also concerned about the high number of cases versus the number of detectives and the lack of vehicles when conducting investigations," said MP Waters.

The DA visited the Edenvale SAPS on June 22 to assess the capacity of service delivery from the station.

The DA’s member of parliament, MP Mike Waters, ward councillors Heather Hart and Bill Rundle, raised concerns about slow vehicle repair times and the impact thereof on police operations and community safety.

They also expressed concern about Edenvale’s caseload.

Their concern is that it is affecting police operations and in turn, affecting community safety.

“We are also concerned about the high number of cases versus the number of detectives and the lack of vehicles when conducting investigations,” said MP Waters.

“Edenvale has 38 detectives carrying 2 545 dockets, or 67 cases each. Between the 38 of them, they have to share 17 vehicles when all of them are in working order. At the moment, only 14 vehicles are available to the detectives and the staff in Edenvale are dedicated to the fight against crime,” said MP Waters.

According to statistics, the Edenvale SAPS has 143 police officers and 39 vehicles.

Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts said, “The visit by the DA was welcomed – the public’s safety remains a priority.”

“It was not the first oversight and we as the police will continue to ensure that we are equipped to serve the community,” he said.

The Edenvale SAPS station commander, Colonel Eddie Trollip, shared Lt Col Roberts’ sentiments about community safety being the police’s main priority.

“The community’s safety is important and we will also work towards ensuring that the Edenvale SAPS is fully functioning,” said Col Trollip.
