Bedford Centre heist suspects are charged

The manhunt to find the remaining suspects who, according to sources close to the investigation, made off with about R4-million, continues.

The two suspects arrested in connection with the cash-in-transit heist at Bedford Centre have been officially charged.

According to the Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi, the two men are 37 and 32 years old.

“The men appeared in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court where they were charged with the cash-in-transit robbery at Bedford Centre. They remain in police custody,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

“The location of the suspects cannot be made public and the suspects’ names cannot be published as they have yet to enter a plea in court,” said Sgt Nhlabathi.

On January 29, SBV guards collecting cash from the banking court were met by robbers on the escalators.

A shoot-out ensued, resulting in two guards, two shoppers and two suspects being injured.

The injured suspects spent over a month in a hospital, where they were kept under police guard.

The manhunt to find the remaining suspects who, according to sources close to the investigation, made off with an amount estimated to be in the region of R4-million.

An AK47 rifle and a 9mm pistol, both unlicensed, were recovered from the suspects at the scene.

The Bedford Centre has since assured its tenants and customers that their security remains a priority.

“To this end, the process of cash-in-transit delivery will be urgently reviewed and assessed, so that this function is moved away from the public spaces at Bedford Centre,” said the centre management in a statement.

At the time of going to press, it was unknown when the suspects would appear in court again.
