Jeppe hosts 87th flower show

Jeppe High School for Girls hosted its 87th instalment of the flower show last Saturday.

The show was a visual and sensory feast, as the school also celebrated its 125th birthday.

Each girl in the school took part in the flower show and was encouraged to unleash her creative and imaginative skills.

The girls are not given any formal instruction in the art of flower arranging but many find they have a natural talent and enjoy expressing themselves in this creative medium.

Girls are encouraged to enter as many of the categories of the show as possible and there are usually over 2 000 arrangements submitted each year.

The juniors (grades 8 and 9) could enter two to three home-grown blooms, or choose from categories ranging from Cinderella Splendour, It’s in the bag and Flowery fireworks, to Arrangement in a Tea Cup, Shades of Green, Something old, something new, Pretty as a picture and Magnificent Monsters, which were made out of fruit and vegetables.

The categories for the seniors (grades 10 to 12) ranged from Tribute to Maya Angelou, Opposites attract and African Sunflowers, to Timeless Beauty, Driftwood decor, Into the light, Fame: celebrating the performing arts and Give a girl the right shoes and she will conquer the world: Marilyn Monroe.

The event saw young and old flower lovers coming together.
