Residents step in

In the November 19 edition of the NEWS, it was reported that the municipality continued to turn a blind eye to the degradation and destruction of the historic Horwood’s Farm homestead.

Residents decided to take matters into their own hands last week when they sealed up the broken windows at the Horwood’s Farm homestead.

In the November 19 edition of the NEWS, it was reported that the municipality continued to turn a blind eye to the degradation and destruction of the historic Horwood’s Farm homestead.

While the pleas of the community fell on deaf ears, vagrants had broken into the house and were sleeping inside.

In addition, the ward 18 councillor for Edenvale, Clr Heather Hart, had heard rumours that security guards employed by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) turned a blind eye to what was going in inside the house.

It is also believed that the guards have taken money from vagrants to stay in both the homestead and in the section behind the tea room.

On Monday last week, residents armed with a generator and burglar bars visited the house.

The aim was to install the burglar proofing before more damage was done to the old house.

In response to questions asked for the November 19 edition, the spokesperson for the EMM, Mr Temba Gadebe, said additional guards would be employed to protect the homestead.
