10 Comrades in 10 days for charity

This run equals a distance of 900 kilometres in 10 days. The motivation for the three runners initiating the Ten10 Marathon is to raise money for the Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS)

Three runners have taken on the task of running the distance of 10 Comrades Marathons in 10 consecutive days to raise funds for two South African charities.

Bedfordview resident Hazel Moller is one of three runners who are currently running the self-titled Ten10 Marathon challenge.

Moller and her co-runners started their journey on May 23 in Bedfordview and will follow a nine stage route to Pietermaritzburg. The tenth and final stage will be the running of the Comrades on June 1.

This run equals a distance of 900 kilometres in 10 days. The motivation for the three runners initiating the Ten10 Marathon is to raise money for the Pet Empowerment in Townships (PETS) initiative and Pink Drive, a breast cancer and screening initiative.

Bedfordview and Jeppe athletics club members were up early on Friday, May 23, to send off Moller and her co-runners as they began their winding journey.

Moller, who is an engineer and a runner for the Bedfordview Club, will tackle this 900 kilometre challenge with Hilton Murray and Carlo Gibson.

“I run because I love it. It makes me feel alive. It reminds me of just how blessed I am to have a wonderful husband and family, a healthy body, a roof over my head and food in my belly,” said Moller.

“When I run, I often contemplate why I have been so blessed and last year when I did the Double Washie for charity, I realised I am blessed. By running I can pass my blessing on. This is why chose to help PETS and the Pink Drive,” said Moller

“This run is for the charities. It is not about me. When the chips are down I will suffer for a moment. But there are people and animals who suffer for a lifetime. This is my motivation,” said Moller.

Ms Moller has 13 Comrades under her belt. She completed her first Comrades in 1990.
