Scrap metal theives must be reported – SAPS

Residents must be alert to suspicious behaviour relating to suspected stolen metal objects.

Last week, officers from the Edenvale SAPS made four arrests related to contraventions of the Secondhand Goods Act.

In one of the cases, a man was caught after he ripped up a water meter.

Corporate communications officer for the Edenvale SAPS, Warrant Officer Jean Olckers said the man was caught by reaction officers from CQB Security.

“Well done to the security officers involved in the arrest,’ he said.

He also urged residents to be alert of suspicious behaviour relating to suspected stolen metal objects.

“This can relate to the digging of trenches at odd hours or as simple as someone pushing a trolley loaded with metal objects,” said W/O Olckers.

He also urged resident to report scrap metal dealers who buy stolen metal objects.

“These include copper cables, drain lids, water meters, shopping centre trolleys and objects from building sites,” said W/O Olckers.
