Residents warned of crime increase

“What is the point of having an electric fence it is does not work? It is not there for decoration. An electric fence is a great deterrent for criminals".

The Edenvale SAPS warned of an increase in violent crime last week.

The acting spokesperson for the Edenvale SAPS, Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts, said there had been an increase in violent home invasions in the area.

“Residents are targeted when they leave their homes to investigate noises in their gardens. We even had one robbery where a woman was attacked when she left her home to go outside for a smoke,” he said.

He added that in some cases, residents were negligent with their own security.

“Driving along the streets, it is easy to see which residents are serious about their security and which have become slack,” he said.

Lt Col Roberts advised residents to ensure their security systems are up to date, that all electric fences are in working order and household alarm systems are connected to a security provider.

“What is the point of having an electric fence it is does not work? It is not there for decoration. An electric fence is a great deterrent for criminals,” he said.

Tips

  •  Never investigate noises in your garden. Rather call the SAPS sector police vehicles or a security provider.
  •  Make sure doors and security gates are locked at all times.
  •  Do not leave windows open.
  •  When leaving your house, make sure your alarm system is activated.
  •  Keep a list of emergency contact numbers close by.
  •  Know your neighbours. In the event of suspicious activity in your neighbourhood, alert the SAPS immediately.
