A dog had to be euthanized as a result of its injuries after apparently being beaten with a metal pipe.

The decision was made to euthanize the dog owing to the extreme trauma and injuries suffered by the animal.

Mr Laurence Kingston, the manager of the Bedfordview and Germiston SPCA, said staff received a call from someone on January 21, reporting that someone in his street had beaten a dog with a metal pipe.

Inspector Hope Mokalapa visited the area to investigate.

The dog was found but the owner apparently did not see the incident take place.

Children in the area, however, witnessed what had happened.

The dog was taken to the North Rand Animal Hospital for treatment, but, it had to be euthanized due to the seriousness of its injuries.

“The Germiston and Bedfordview SPCA is currently investigating this matter and obtaining statements from witnesses. A case of animal cruelty will be opened once all the relevant details and statements have been obtained and a report from the attending veterinarian has been received. We, as the SPCA, will charge any perpetrators of these deeds under the Animal Protection Act No 71 of 1962. We commend the public for contacting us,” said Mr Kingston.

He said they experience some form of cruelty to animals on an almost daily basis. Some of the cruelty faced includes physical abuse, mental abuse, lack of care and love – like no water or food for days and the lack of shelter to total abandonment of family pets, from adult dogs and cats to basket, cage or box-loads of puppies and kittens.

“SPCA’s do their utmost best at all times in trying to eradicate all cruelty in whatever form through confiscation, education and legal channels,” said Mr Kingston.
