Hail damage does not stop Little Eden

Unfortunately, the pecan nut blossoms were destroyed in the hailstorms which will affect the 2014 crop of nuts, adding significantly to the financial loss Little Eden has suffered.

At the end of 2013, Little Eden reported severe damage to its Elvira Rota Village following a hailstorm.

Crops of sugar beans and mielies were damaged, along with numerous pecan nut trees and the village’s bird enclosure.

Last week, Little Eden reported that the society was able to recover a small percentage of the mielies which were not completely destroyed in the storms.

The society also planted a new crop of sugar beans.

The birdcages have been restored and are well stocked again thanks to donations of birdlife from Lynn Patterson and Wayne Taylor.

The pecan nuts are a popular item in high demand.

Little Eden thanked the community for its support during this crisis.

The society previously received over R300 000 from the sale of its pecan nuts, mielies and sugar beans. The lost income will now have to be secured from alternative sources in order to make up the shortfall of over R12-million per year that Little Eden must raise to ensure the ongoing care of all the residents.

The Little Eden family of 300 includes 230 residents who were previously abandoned, or who do not receive financial or other support from their families.
