George Bizos bids farewell to Madiba

He spoke about Nelson Mandela’s role in the Greek community, and recalled how the Greek city of Olympia bestowed the freedom of the town on Mandela during the 1980’s, an honour he was unaware of, because prison authorities intercepted the letter.

Dignitaries, including Advocate George Bizos, paid homage to former South African President Nelson Mandela at Saheti School on Sunday, December 8.

Adv Bizos, a long-time friend and confidant of Madiba, also paid tribute to him when he shared some of many memories from the past 60 years.

He spoke about Nelson Mandela’s role in the Greek community, and recalled how the Greek city of Olympia bestowed the freedom of the town on Mandela during the 1980’s, an honour he was unaware of, because prison authorities intercepted the letter.

Madiba accepted the award when he visited Greece after his release from prison.

Head of the Greek Orthodox Church in Johannesburg and Pretoria, His Eminence Archbishop Damaskinos, described Nelson Mandela as a man of God, during the memorial service held in honour of the late statesman at Saheti School’s Chapel.

Those attending the event remembered the contribution made by Madiba in the creation of South Africa’s young democracy as well as his leadership through times of turmoil and uncertainty.
