Laurie Road to get traffic circle

Traffic calming measures for Laurie Road.

Council has confirmed that traffic calming measures are in the offing for Laurie Road.

This comes after the death of 17-year-old Skye Wilsnagh on the road on August 21.

Following Skye’s death, the DA in Ekurhuleni has requested the municipality respond urgently to an application for a traffic circle at the intersection of Aitken and Laurie roads in Edenvale.

Sky is the second person to be killed on Laurie Road this year.

Ward 18 councillor, Heather Hart, said the municipality’s own traffic assessment studies, completed last year, indicated that a traffic circle at this intersection of Laurie and Aitken roads was warranted.

“Despite regular requests regarding the implementation of the circle, council failed to provide feedback,” said Clr Hart.

She added that it was impossible for members of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) to carry out law enforcement everywhere at the same time, but that it was imperative the municipality did everything in its power to keep motorists and pedestrians safe.

Spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Mr Samuel Modiba, confirmed a detailed design for a proposed traffic circle at the Laurie and Aitken roads intersection had been completed.

“The implementation of the proposed traffic circle is scheduled for this financial year between July 2013 and June 2014,” said Mr Modiba.
