Budding star makes noise on amapiano scene

Shimi De Deejay produces some of the hottest hits which take him to another level in the music industry.

A young up-and-coming amapiano music producer from Alexandra, Junior Mogotlane (17), known as ‘Shimi De Deejay’ in the music industry, is making waves with his music.

He was born and raised in Thokoza, Soweto, then moved to Alexandra with his family in 2020. His journey into music began in 2019 when he was 12 years old, sparked by the electrifying presence and talent of the late DJ Paper 707, a renowned figure on the local scene.

In the pursuit of his dreams, Shimi established his own record label, Sgija Industry Entertainment. The label is not only a creative outlet for him but also a launching pad for other aspiring artists, including talents like Sporo Exclusive, Umalume kg, DJ Skayy 24, Leescodedjy and Mac Jazzi.

He said, “I’ve been passionate about music from a young age and watching DJ Paper 707 deejaying lit a fire in me. I knew I wanted to create music that resonated with people.”

With 16 single tracks, three EPs and one album under his belt, Shimi De Deejay is dedicated to leaving his mark on the amapiano genre.

In December last year he released Gomora Boys 2.0 featuring DJ Mellacaw 204 and Toxique and is already garnering attention with over 6 567 streams on Spotify.

He said Gomora Boys 2.0 reflects the experiences and aspirations of young males from the township.

“This song is about encouraging upcoming producers and artists from Gomora. We need to keep pushing, no matter the challenges we face. The industry might throw lemons at us, but we must make lemonade. Our dreams are worth fighting for.”
