With ‘Do it yourself’ as his slogan, Eugene ‘Eugenious’ Selemela is a young boy from Alexandra pushing and doing what he loves the most which is music, and like most boy children in Alex, he was once a soccer and marimba player, but he quit those to focus solely on his craft.
“I fell in love with music when I was a little kid and I decided that let me focus on my music and ditch the other stuff that I was doing. I started singing amapiano and hip-hop, but I am more inclined on hip-hop because I love rap music and I believe it is my calling,” Selemela said.
He said his music is to inspire the youth to always do the right thing – and the fact that he has siblings who look up to him – he always tries to do the right thing every day.
“I am that person who believes in everything that he does. I always use my situations to motivate people, and because I come from a family of artists it was easy for me to be inspired to do what I like.
“When other kids were playing soccer and having fun, I was in the studio trying to perfect and practise my craft, not that I am saying I did not play enough as a kid, but I always had my priorities in place since I was a little child.”
Selemela is set to celebrate his birthday with a bang this year by throwing himself a birthday bash on May 27, as a reminder to himself and everyone to always not forget the main character, which is yourself. He believes that he has not been celebrated enough and would like to do the honours by himself and not wait for people to do it for him.
“The reason I am doing a birthday bash is that since I was born, I have never had a birthday celebration or birthday party. My birthday was always treated like a normal day; it did not feel like anything was happening. I wanted to change that dynamic for myself because I believe that if you don’t do it yourself, no one else will.”
He said there will be performances, MCs, DJs and surprise guests at his birthday bash, and he would appreciate people coming to celebrate with him.
