Alex’s drama queen dazzles in The Queen

Alexandra's very own Nomsa Buthelezi continues to dazzle The Queen stage as MaJali, wife of King Brutus, in the DStv drama series, which is sadly nearing the end of its life spell on the small screen.

Alexandra’s very own drama queen Nomsa Shezi-Buthelezi continues to make waves as she dazzles on the DStv drama series, The Queen.

Born in Alexandra at the corner of 7th Avenue and Hofmeyer Street, Buthelezi started acting at a tender age as she used to strike roles in most of the schools’ plays and eventually graduated in various drama groups in the township.

She cut her professional career under the watchful eye of Alexandra’s late doyen of theatre, Bongani Linda, of Victory Sonqoba and she has never looked back.

“I grew up in the era when a TV set was a luxury and all we could do as children was play, play and play some more,” said Buthelezi, who grew up admiring the fine acting skills of stars like Leleti Khumalo of Serafina, and Gibson Kente, to name just a few, who had a huge influence on me in the choice of my future career.”

On her advice to young and aspiring actors and actresses, Buthelezi, who plays the role of the queen under the name of MaJali, wife of King Brutus, urged the aspirants never to give up on their dreams and to always stick to what they believe in.

“As a loving mother, I would go to the ends of the Earth to remain a pillar of strength for my children and family and I would urge other mothers to also support their children in the same way.

“I think I was really blessed to have worked with the Fergusons [Connie and the late Shona Ferguson] on this hard-hitting drama. It’s a pity it is fast reaching the end of its screen life, though I am not certain when it will officially be off air.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my reign as the queen. I may not know where my foot will step next but the Almighty always provides,” said the deeply religious Buthelezi, who was brought up by God-fearing parents, both of whom still occupy the family home on 7th Avenue.
