Saturday craft: windsocks made from recycled tin cans

Make a colourful recycled tin can windsock with items you already have on hand! This craft is simple and fun for children of all ages!

It’s beginning to feel like winter in South Africa, so help your child construct these colourful recycled can windsocks to hang outside to welcome the cold and windy weather! They’re quite easy to make and look fantastic!

What you need

  • A recycled can (of any size!)
  • Acrylic paint and brushes
  • Craft Bond Glue
  • Ribbons in various colours (you could also use Yarn, Coloured Paper, etc.)
  • Glitter, Stickers, Gemstones, Sequins, and other embellishments
  • Duck tape or masking tape

Top tip: To avoid sharp edges, line the inside rims of the cans with a layer or two of thick masking or duct tape!

How to make it

  1. Begin by letting your child paint the can in their preferred colours.
  2. After the paint has dried, apply adhesive to adhere multicoloured ribbons to the can’s bottom rim. You can also tie a ribbon across the top of the can to make it easier to hang.
