27 October declared as date for local government elections

JOBURG – President Ramaphosa urges eligible and especially first-time voters to ensure that they are registered to take part in the elections.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced 27 October as the date on which local government elections will take place.

This is the sixth time under the country’s democratic dispensation that voters will elect leadership and public representatives at metropolitan, district and local level.

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma will follow the necessary legal processes to proclaim the date and undertake other necessary requirements.

Ramaphosa urged eligible and especially first-time voters to ensure that they were registered to take part in the elections.

To register to vote, you must be a South African citizen, be at least 16 years old (you can only vote from age 18) and have a green bar-coded ID book, smart ID or Temporary Identity Certificate.

Those who are registering for the first time are urged to make an appointment to apply at their local IEC office [https://www.elections.org.za/pw/About-Us/Find-IEC-Local-Offices]. Those wanting to register should bring along their green bar-coded ID book, smart ID or Temporary Identity Certificate.

Registration can take up to seven working days, according to the Electoral Commission of South Africa.
