Alex’s rap kings in the making

ALEXANDRA – Rap battle contest gets youth off the streets.

 

Some of Alex’s youth could be on their way to stardom in the hip-hop music industry, if they fit the bill.

Rather than be on the street and up to mischief, they spent Saturday, 18 November showcasing their talent at a rap battle contest at San Kopano community centre, organised by Morgeez Talent Search-Management Company. Unfortunately, no girls were among the hopefuls who showed up.

About 50 of them grabbed this rare chance in a township that has unearthed varied and legendary global stars, leaders and luminaries in many art forms, sports and also religion despite their poor and humble backgrounds. In company president Chris Odiley’s words, “We came to expose the hood’s galore of talent which ought to be promoted and safeguarded.

“We will select the best five from the lot, evaluate their performances, mentor and groom them and, expose them to management skills to prevent them from exploitation before unleashing them to scouts.”

He added that, apart from the five lucky ones, “All of them are winners bound together in a common cause and love of the genre which should be maintained as a culture.”

Summing up, Odiley quipped, “Hip-hop is about love and is part of life for all age groups.”
