What to do on Human Rights Day

Public holidays in South Africa have a certain mystic attached to them – days dedicated to reflecting on our past as a nation in addition to looking to the future and keeping the spirit of ubuntu and the ‘rainbow nation’ alive.
Since Human Rights Day is a public holiday, your day could go either one of two ways – you can sleep in and have a mid-week snooze or you can join in on the celebrations and events that commemorate the day.
If you do decide to join in on the celebrations, we’ve got a list of some fun mid-week things to do – provided you give a toast to those who fought for the protection and provision of our basic human rights.

The Gardens Rooftop Party
Join The Gardens in the heart of the Jozi as they celebrate Human Rights Day in true ‘Jozi Rooftop’ style. The Gardens offers an intimate and elegant rooftop experience like no other in the city. The lineup includes acts such as 2lani The Warrior, Ady Fleming, Avi Subban, D’ritmo, DeepSouls, JustSmart, Metro Ticket, Pimp Squad, Rob Toca, Travisto and Weston & Engine. Doors open at 12 noon and tickets cost between R120 – R180 per person.
Human Rights Day @ Funworld Midrand
Enjoy a great fun-filled family day at the park. There will be a children’s play area, African cuisine, and even a car wash. Alternatively, bring your own food, snacks and braai gear. Tickets cost between R40 – R80 per person and will be available at the gates.
Cerebral S1E4: Human Rights Edition
Cerebral provides a platform for young expressionists to commemorate and celebrate this important day. You can expect an environment where these expressionists exhibit and share their art, ideas, merchandise and music with peers and the industry alike. Cerebral S1E4 will be a celebration of some of the hard-fought freedoms that those who gave their lives 58 years ago allowed us all to enjoy. Entry is R30 per person before 5pm and R50 thereafter. Food and bar services will be available on the day.
Human Rights Day at Charlie Brown’s Fourways
For a fun and exciting day out with the family, Charlie Brown’s Family Ranch in Fourways will be open, offering families a wonderful space to relax, let loose and celebrate this significant day. There’s plenty of fun for everyone. There are water slides for kids, sports for dad on their BIG screen, delicious food and much more.
745th Street Store – Maboneng
Join Work Shop Newtown from 10am to 6pm as they give back to the community with the 745th edition of the pop-up store where the homeless shop for free. Bring your old and wearable clothes with and spend some time with those less fortunate.
