Locals enjoy music from Shekhinah and more

Alexandra - Locals enjoyed music from Shekhinah, African Roots and Twins on Decks at the Arts Alive festival.

Alexandra came alive on 21 October when the latest City of Johannesburg Arts Alive event was held at the 3 Square Grounds.

The Alex Cultural Day, which was set to be held in September, included some of the country’s biggest artists such as Shekhinah, African Roots and Twins On Decks.

Shekhinah serenaded the crowd with her debut hit single, Back to the Beach, but it was her second single Let You Know off her debut album that caused the crowd to lose all their morals.

The purpose of the event, which was mainly aimed at the youth, was to instil culture in the youngsters and to promote social cohesion in the township.

Vincent Motau, the strategic manager of Johannesburg City Theatres, said they had partnered with Small Media and Micro-enterprises (SMMEs) in the city and local artists so that they could gain exposure.

“Of course, artists get the chance to showcase their music to the people and that helps them grow,” he said.

He added that by showcasing their products to the people at these events, SMMEs could grow their businesses which leads to creating jobs to unemployed youth.

Festival manager, Roshnie Moonsamy said she was excited about bringing the concert to Alex.

“We want to expand the festival, so this was a way for us to attract people to the festival, which grows bigger and bigger every year,” Moonsamy said.

The festival hosts events such as Jazz On The Lake at Zoo Lake, the Eldos festival and Soweto Cultural Day, among others.

The next event under the Arts Alive festival is the Urban Culture Clash on 28 October at Constitutional Hill.
