Ever since he can remember, Vendahhboy has been fascinated with photography. But it was not until 2014 when he decided that he wanted to be a professional photographer.
Growing up in the dilapidated Alexandra, he saw beauty in all the ruins and wanted to share it with those who were not familiar with the township.
“I wanted to show the world the beauty of my community and South Africa and the only way I knew how was through photography,” he said.

As a resident of the community, he hopes to boost the township’s tourism industry through his photographs. “I do most of my shoots around Alex so that people can see the beauty I see, maybe then they would make time to experience this township of ours.”
He declined an offer from his mother to study towards a more ‘respected’ career after getting his matric. He did not see himself doing anything other than photography. To realise his dreams of doing photography professionally, Vendahhboy or The Unknown Photographer – as he is known to many – had to make a lot of sacrifices.

“I had to sell my laptop, sound system and asked some of my relatives if they could donate some money to buy a camera.” With no formal training, Vendahhboy learnt to master the art of photography through YouTube tutorial videos and do extra research. His ultimate dream is to photograph icons such as Bill Gates and David Beckham
“If I could have a sponsor to showcase my work, it would boost my profile and also give me exposure.”
He also mentioned that he had limited equipment. “If somebody would be willing to sponsor new equipment, it would be great.” Vendahhboy would also like to be an in-house photographer for a large company.

“Memories last longer and I would like my work to be part of historical archives.
