Easy Freak finally releases much-anticipated debut

JOBURG – The album features the signature elements of funky groove, future sounds, heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies and emotion ever present in Easy Freak’s music.

The name Easy Freak may not be popular yet, but that is all about to change …

Easy Freak is a new electronic duo from South Africa consisting of Dominic Hurd and Jude Kenrick, both originally from Durban. Their sound is unique in the sense that it successfully incorporates an eclectic mix of pop, electro, funk, soul and other sounds.

Hurd and Kendrick have both studied music and also been in many jazz ensembles before officially starting Easy Freak. Together, they write and produce their own music.

“Our music is a collaborative process between the two of us. We both contribute to the production and the writing of the songs. We are very comfortable with each other and there is a level of trust when it comes to sharing ideas and executing the best ones,” said Kenrick.

In a time where there is so much music being released, it is difficult to break into the game and remain relevant. For Easy Freak, they believe that good music promotes itself. “We never go into the studio with the intention of making a hit record. These days, it feels like a lot of the pop artists are all following the same formula on how to make a hit record.

“We are more focused on making the best music we possibly can because real and honest music lasts longer than the bubble gum pop hits,” added Hurd.

Their debut single and music video for So Lonely stormed the charts on radio nationwide as well as receiving extensive play on Trace TV and MTV Africa. They released their second single and music video for Gotta Be You in October last year.

In the two years of working together, they have already shared the stage with the likes of Wolfpack, Sketchy Bongo, Veranda Panda, Gangs of Ballet, Majozi and Matthew Mole and many more prominent voices in the industry.

After one-and-a-half years of many late nights, the duo has finally released their debut album, titled I’m Alright. The biggest theme throughout the album is love. Love and loss – a universal theme. The theme of God is also a recurring one, finding comfort in religion throughout tough times of love and loss is also something Easy Freak features on the album.

Hurd said the title of the album has a few meanings but one of them is, “It speaks of the masks we put on in life, about the questions and doubts that pop up, and about how life doesn’t always make sense. But through all of that, we seem to come out on top. We find peace in not always knowing, in asking questions, and in not always having it together. Nobody’s perfect, but we’re alright.”

The album features guest appearances from the likes of Raheem Kemet, ByLwansta, Red Robyn, Jaedon Daniel and Kaien Cruz of Wolfpack.

The album is now available for purchase.
