Entries now open for new stars in talent search competition

JOBURG – High school youngsters can enter the Calling a Star Competition and see their dreams come true

Two high school youngsters from Gauteng will receive an opportunity to have their acting dream come true by performing in a grand scale original musical that will hold its world premiere at the Joburg Theatre in August. Calling me Home is the inspiring story of a young woman named Grace, who travels across the ocean to find a new life and in the process finds new friends and love.

The winner of Calling A Star Competition will be working with other young stars including Zion Zuke and Isabella Jane.

Head of marketing for the show, Jako Krige said, “The audition process has been thrown wide open to include a talent search competition and any high school youngsters between the ages of 14 and 19 can enter, regardless of their experience.”

Once entries have closed on 28 April, 20 finalists will be chosen. The 20 young performers will then be part of a workshop presented by the Africa Voices Trust at the Joburg Theatre, where some of the country’s most experienced performers will work with them, teaching them some basics about performing and making it in the industry. All the finalists then get a chance to perform live during an event at the UJ Arts Centre Theatre on the Auckland Park Kingsway Campus of the University of Johannesburg, where judges will make a final decision about which two youngsters will join the cast for the first three-week run.

Krige added, “We are looking for any talented singers with a love for the stage. All they have to do is send a video clip of themselves singing a song from a musical or cabaret. They do not have to dress up – they just need to sing.”

Schools who encourage their children to enter will also gain access to special deals and prizes, as well as ticket giveaways for Calling me Home and a chance to see and experience the magic of theatre backstage.
