Pippi Langkous – The Musical to wow schools

JOBURG – Pippi Langkous – The Musical, is now running at the National Children's Theatre in Parktown, Johannesburg.

The girl with the red plaits who is mischievous, incredibly strong and full of fun, is back, along with her case full of gold and the most amazing adventures ever!

The production of Pippi Langkous has been made possible by the last part of a grant of R2 million from the National Lotteries Commission.

Owing to popular demand, Pippi Langkous – Astrid Lindgren’s classic children’s comic tale – will play its fourth season in Afrikaans, touring to schools in Gauteng.

This high-spirited musical adaptation began on 13 February at the National Children’s Theatre in Parktown, Johannesburg. Directed by Francois Theron, Pippi Langkous ingeniously captures both the spikiness and the pathos of the little girl who lives alone with her monkey and her horse.

Her role is not of a hero, but rather that of a magical helper or donor in a fairy tale, bringing colour and joy into ordinary children’s lives. She is also the source of unlimited wealth, fulfilling the wildest dreams of any child.

The show is energetic, good fun and the set is a unique jungle gym. The message is clear – whatever life throws at you, good or bad, you can triumph if you believe in yourself. This is a theatrical adventure at its best – a perfect treat for the entire school.

Pippi Langkous has been part of local popular culture since the 70s. Its rejuvenation onstage opens young theatre-goers’ awareness of Sweden’s best-loved child character, who has taken international film, television and book industries by storm.
