Top cop’s advice: Don’t try to be heroes

Colonel Johan Theunissen urges CPF members not to get involved in dangerous police work.

Colonel Johan Theunissen, the Honeydew police crime-prevention commander, has warned ordinary citizens not to risk their lives by trying to perform police duties.

Theunissen was speaking at a Community Policing Forum meeting held at the Honeydew Police Station on 1 February, ahead of the CPF’s executive committee election.

“We wear police uniforms because we are here to protect the public. I don’t want any of you putting your lives in danger,” he said. He added that, instead of endangering their lives, they can get involved in patrols and marketing strategies held by the police in conjunction with the CPF.

CPF spokesperson Jon Rosenberg said reflector jackets are made available so that interested members can take part in police events. But they have to be returned to the station after the event to avoid getting lost and falling into the wrong hands.
