WATCH: Athi rides new crest of a wave

JOBURG – There's a new songstress in town and if her debut single is anything to go by, she isn't here to play.

Athenkosi Zintle Mgoqo, aka Athi, is buzzing with confidence following the release of her debut single, Pretty BumBum.

Athi started singing and performing at a very young age; she enjoyed singing competitions and would be cast for leads in high school musicals. “It has always been a passion of mine. It is a calling in the sense that not everyone is chosen to entertain, as it does not come naturally for a lot of people,” she said.

Having studied a double major in music live performance as well as screen acting at Afda (The School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance).

This Eastern Cape beauty, currently based in Rosebank, is proving there’s more to her than her good looks by topping her class among other striving musicians, both local and international.

The new Pretty BumBum, featuring multi-award winning Nigerian dancehall sensation, Patoranking, has received great reviews. On featuring Patoranking, Athi said she had to make sure that her debut single caught the attention of the people.

“We needed someone to put the cherry on top and Pato was the right guy,” she explained.

Athi’s genre of music is R&B pop and electro dance pop and she has a deep interest in fashion with an edgy but formal style. “It’s a great time to be African; everyone wants this African sound. My goal is to put us on the map,” she said.

Currently, Athi is recording follow-on singles, and fans can expect more heavyweight collaborations, featuring the likes of Davido this summer.
