Up close with Linda Mbuso

JOBURG – Read to find out what radio presenter, writer, musician and Psychology degree graduate, Linda Mbuso had to say about his journey in the entertainment industry.

Radio presenter, writer, musician and BA Psychology degree cum laude graduate, Linda Mbuso, shared his journey thus far in the entertainment industry.

In an interview with the Fourways Review, the Fourways resident said he was an educator and creator who was willing to change the world and how people engaged with one another.

“I jumped into radio as it was more of what I wanted to do. When I was 18 years old, I was introduced to radio in my matric year at Holy Family College in Parktown where I was the deputy head boy. I believe that my radio influence and aspirations were kick-started at my in-school radio station,” said Mbuso.

While completing his tertiary education towards a diploma in media studies and at the same time majoring in public relations and radio broadcasting at the University of Johannesburg, Mbuso continued to plant his feet firmly in the media industry, sharing his time between a community radio station and a corporate marketing job at Wesbank Financial Services.

Mbuso’s commercial radio career took off in 2009 at Gauteng youth station, 99.2 YFM where he worked for six years. “My move from YFM to 5FM has been somewhat interesting as I felt more at home. 5FM is more of a commercial radio and has a bigger audience. What I have noticed is that 5FM is more serious about radio than craft, opposed to YFM, as we were given leeway,” Mbuso said.

When asked how his first day was at 5FM, Mbuso said he was quite scared as everything seemed different and intimidating. “I have always wanted to work for 5FM when I was younger and when it actually happened it really amazed and shocked me; it was somewhat mind-blowing,” Mbuso expressed.

The all-round entertainer said being a psychology graduate had made him acknowledge the type of listener he talked to as it assisted him to evaluate how people thought.

“The message I can give to young aspiring hopefuls who want to be a part of the entertainment industry is to take being a radio presenter as a real job; do not just stumble and hope that it will work. You need to be serious about it and in the process do not compromise on the quality of work you need to provide to your audience. You need to produce it to the best of your ability,” Mbuso said.

When asked where he saw himself in five years, Mbuso said he would release a book and will be travelling. “I see myself living in a more global space, a 5FM drive-time host and have a masters in psychology.”
