Lies and love in new local film

JOBURG – Filmed and showing around Johannesburg is South Africa's new romantic comedy.

The Afrikaans romantic comedy, Sy Klink Soos Lente is the newest South African film to hit the big screen and the entire country should be eager to check out this movie.

The film’s two main characters were excited about the release of the movie, launched at The Good Luck Bar in Johannesburg’s 1Fox venue, and they told City Buzz all about it.

“Sy Klink Soos Lente is a romantic comedy about a mechanic who falls in love with his boss’ daughter, but because he doesn’t want her to know who he is, he tells her he is a musician, and then he has to start a band to win her heart,” explained Stiaan Smith, who stars as Ben, the musician and romantic lead in the movie.

Amalia Uys, who stars as the female lead character, Linda, added, “It’s a romantic comedy about finding love and inspiration to follow and realise one’s true potential.”

The movie, which was filmed at multiple locations in Johannesburg, combines South African culture with top-class production to create a film of stellar quality, and although the story is told in Afrikaans, Smith and Uys are confident that it will resonate with people of all cultures – an important factor that would contribute to the success of any local production.

“It’s a story that includes themes such as fighting to be good enough for the girl you love, and friendship, which speaks to all cultures,” said Smith.

Confident in the upcoming success of the film, Uys talked about growing the industry for all local talent. “Every film is beneficial for the South African film industry. South African filmmakers work very hard to put films on the screen in a climate that is very challenging with regards to resources,” said Uys.

“The only way an industry can grow is if we continue to make more films, learn from our mistakes, and get better.”

Sy Klink Soos Lente premiered on 14 September and will be in cinemas on 30 September.
