Artists to honour Mandela during Heritage Month

JOHANNESBURG – Artists come together to celebrate Mandela with a public concert.

As celebrations for Heritage Month kicks off across the country, noted musicians, Concord Nkabinde and David Klassen, are set to collaborate for a public concert aimed at celebrating the late Nelson Mandela, this month.

The musical collaboration, put together in consultation with the Houghton-based Nelson Mandela Foundation, will see the two artists dig into their collective years of musical performance and production to stage the musical piece, Nelson Mandela –The Song Lives On.

The concert will be a performance piece aimed at re-visiting the essence and depth found in the profound words of the late statesman.

Soweto-born Nkabinde explained that bringing the production to life was a way to ensure the impact created by the words of power, love, courage and healing that Madiba left South Africans with, lasted for generations to come.

“This will be just as exciting for the audience as it will be to us, as we together re-examine the words and ideals of an icon,” he said.

Echoing this was Klassen, who expressed excitement at the upcoming project, adding that the musical piece was a way to honour the values and humanitarian ideals Mandela stood for.

In addition to Klassen and Nkabinde, the celebratory concert will feature three other Cape Town-based artists in the line-up and they are Mark Fransman, a highly accomplished saxophonist; Nomfundo Xaluva, a pianist, composer and music educator as well as Bulelwa Basse, a performance poet, language facilitator and speaker.

The anticipated concert will take place on 23 September at the Drostdy Teater in Stellenbosch and will include, in the lead-up, free community workshops, intended to engage and inspire young artists to tap into the country’s rich heritage.
