World Retina Week kicks off in September

JOBURG – World Retina Week will commence on 19 September.

World Retina Week, which is held from 19 to 25 September, is observed in 40 countries and aims to create awareness of the treatment for retinal genetic conditions through scientific research.

This week coincides with Eye Care Awareness Month which also starts on 19 September.

Retina South Africa said there has been remarkable progress made in the fields of gene therapy, stem cells and artificial retinas.

Retinal conditions such as macular degenerations and dystrophies, retinitis pigmentosa and other rare conditions cause loss of vision in more than 40 million people worldwide and a probable 150 000 South Africans.

Retina South Africa is the only patient group in the country which is determined to bring clinical trials, which have been showing great promise, and effective treatments to South Africa.
