Youth on trial for two robberies committed minutes apart

ALEXANDRA - Youth involved in two robberies minutes apart awaits bail application

After admitting to one armed robbery charge and denied bail, Andile Sithole, a 22-year-old Alex resident, will reappear in Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on 5 July for a second bail application.

The suspect was accused of two robberies committed minutes apart, however, he only admitted to one of the charges. It was said that the accused committed both robberies with two accomplices, who are still at large.

The trio was said to have robbed two victims in Wendywood in the afternoon on 27 June. In the first incident, the suspects pointed a firearm at a 58-year-old man who was walking alone before robbing him of a Nokia cellphone valued at R500 and R80 in cash.

Minutes later, the trio met the second victim, a 38-year-old man and the first victim’s neighbour, walking on the same street. Also at gunpoint, the trio searched the man and took his Blackberry cellphone valued at R2 500 and R400 in cash.

Police on patrol in the area stumbled on the second robbery and arrested the accused while his accomplices fled the scene. The two stolen cellphones were found on the suspect, however, the firearm and money were not recovered.

The accused claimed that both cellphones had been stolen from the second victim, but police disputed this after conversing with both victims on the street.

The case continues.
