Mkhombandlela Choir a joy to hear

JOBURG - Alex's creative juices continue to ooze talent with ease.

This has evidently been happening for decades in all forms of art genres deriving from the township’s natural talent that continues to grace the performing arts, sports, music and dance scene both locally and internationally. One may be forgiven to assume this immense talent is the only worthy asset left still keeping the otherwise dysfunctional area intact and afloat.

One such talent is the Mkhombandlela Choir which may deceptively pass for a ragtag group of pretentious up-starts until the 15-member group exudes its infectious melodies of traditional recitations, dances and folklore themes, as well as a cappella gospel musical creations.

Led by the unassuming and laid-back Sihlalo Hlope, the group is not one to miss and underestimate as they undoubtedly could, given the chance, rise to stardom locally and elsewhere. One can’t help but wish they are afforded appropriate platforms other than weddings, parties and funerals to exhibit their talent, deep devotion and captivating melodies.

The group only started three years ago and member of the choir, Thulisile Khono said they came together to avoid poverty and associated negative temptation. “It’s the only way to keep ourselves busy and off the streets where there is no benefit,” she said while urging others to stay off drugs, alcohol and to remain in school.

“We try to set an example for those in despair through music which soothes when and where it hurts and to help promote and keep our African cultures vibrant. Never lose your cultural heritage as it is the only campus to help one navigate from the past through the present and into the future,” Khono stressed.
