Going Back to the City

JOHANNESBURG – Back to the City is set to blow your mind.

Back to the City Festival is back and bigger than ever!

Back to the City Festival, held annually at Newtown’s Mary Fitzgerald Square, will celebrate its 10-year anniversary this year on 27 April.

Hip-hop has emerged as the biggest musical story of the new millennium; beginning as a form of ghetto youth expression and has since grown into a multi-million dollar industry that has stretched to cities across Europe, Asia and of course Africa with Johannesburg being no exception.

The festival began on the corner of Henry Nxumalo and Bree streets with one man’s dream to celebrate hip-hop, while connecting the globe and bringing the youth together under one theme: the love of hip-hop.

The exciting music festival has been described as the biggest hip-hop music festival in Africa, thus setting a high standard of music appreciation for the rest of the continent.

This year’s festival is set to feature 46 live music acts including the baddest in the game, AKA, Ricky Rick and Gigi Lamayne, as well as 32 DJs including DJ Doowap and Speedsta, in addition to 10 live bands!

Not only is there music to get excited about, but fans can also look forward to some of the best breakdancers, MCs, beatboxers and all the other types of performers in the hip-hop culture.

Newtown will commemorate Freedom Day with thousands of youth celebrating the holiday through hip-hop music. This year, three surprise international hip-hop acts will grace the stage as we create a memorable celebration, the 10k challenge prize money doubled for each winner, just to mention a few. This year, the festival will bring in three surprise international acts to commemorate Freedom Day with thousands of die-hard African hip-hop fans and who will share the stage with our internationally-recognised local talent – now that’s something we can definitely get excited about!

Last year’s festival was packed almost to capacity and festival-goers loved every minute of the intense musical experience.

It’s set to be the hip-hop event of the year, so there’s no reason to miss out on Back to the City’s 10-year anniversary celebration.
