LISTEN: Obita brings back quality

JOBURG – Obita is back to set the hip-hop scene alight and here's what he had to say...

Obita, a Johannesburg-based rapper, is back with a bang and promises to ruffle a few feathers with his booming voice and aggressive presence.

Edward Obita, the award-winning musician, has worked as a voice-over artist for various companies over the past six years including MTN, Supersport and Nedbank.

Obita said he wanted to bring back quality to the music scene, as many musicians and rappers hide behind nice beats.

“You can call me ‘doctor hurt your feelings’, I want to bring back quality into this. Artists are not about expressing themselves anymore now, they are about the money,” Obita said.

Obita believes that many rappers are more about chasing the numbers than sending a good message and uplifting the community.

The killer lyricist has released a thought-provoking song that is getting the country talking. His latest offering after a three-year musical hiatus is titled Fihla, featuring fellow talented lyricists Pitch Black Afro and Vertigo Man.

When asked about the song he said, “My intention was to release a thought-provoking track, as I feel music with relevant subject matter is missing from today’s hip-hop music.”

On working with Pitch Black Afro, one of the most famous local musicians, he said it was an honour for him to work with someone with so much experience.

The state of South African hip-hop has improved over the years and has opened a lot of opportunities for young artists. Obita said he was happy with the current state of the industry, but admitted that there are still a lot of fake musicians out there. “The industry is entertaining. I love the work ethic and the self-realisation and that guys are not signed by any record labels but they are big superstars.”

He has been hard at work and is set to release a lot of freestyle songs throughout the year, and fans can expect the release of the music video of Fihla soon.
