Meet songstress Lelo Ramasimong

Always and Forever – A Tribute to Luther Vandross is set to kick off at Joburg Theatre for four nights only, and City Buzz caught up with one of the vocalists in the show, Lelo Ramasimong.

Timothy Moloi is set to embody the late, great, Luther Vandross in a tribute show at Joburg Theatre, but we’re interested to delve into the life of Ramasimong and find out how she made it this far.

Beginning her singing career in high school, the songbird first performed professionally in her hometown, Durban.

Since her early start, she’s taken the entertainment industry by storm, forming part of the top 10 finalists on Idols SA some years ago and took to the dance floor on the hit ballroom TV show, Strictly Come Dancing.

After taking part in TV shows, Ramasimong took to the theatre to put her voice to the ultimate test by performing in a stage production – and one of the biggest moments of her professional career so far.

“The main highlight of my career so far was performing in Dream Girls in 2011, here in Joburg,” Ramasimong started.

“The music, the production, the set, the clothing – everything in the production was world class.”

Now backing Moloi in the tribute show, the songstress said, “I’m so excited to work with Timothy Moloi and sing Luther Vandross’ songs.”

Apart from the production, the singer is working on an album and describes her sound as pop with hints of soul and RnB.

While she doesn’t know what jobs she’ll be undertaking after the four-performance-only tribute show, she knows that whatever it is, she’ll do it in song.

“In this industry you really never know when you’re going to be working again and what you’re going to be doing, but as long as there’s music involved I’m game,” she concluded.

Catch Ramasimong on stage at Joburg Theatre from 31 March.
