Olive Tree Theatre urges young filmmakers to enter competition

ALEXANDRA - The Olive Tree Theatre has extended an appeal to aspiring film makers to submit 20 minute film scripts for a competition which will be part of a Youth Film Festival in June.

The Olive Tree Theatre has extended an appeal to aspiring filmmakers to submit a 20-minute film script for a competition which will be part of a Youth Film Festival in June which will celebrate youth month.

The appeal was first made in February, however, only a few submissions were received and the deadline for submissions has now been extended to the end of April. The shortlisted submissions will be screened on 16 and 17 June and three winners will be chosen on 18 June.

The first prize winner will receive R5 000, the first runner-up will receive R3 000 and the second runner-up will receive R2 000.

The filmmakers are expected to use their own equipment and the scripts can revolve around any area or topic of their choice. After the awards ceremony, subject to resource availability, the theatre will train the winners in the trade and assist them with equipment know-how.

Jessica Ndaba, of the theatre, said the initiative, sponsored by the City of Joburg’s Arts and Heritage Department, was part of the theatre’s long-term plan to make the place an alternative venue for lovers of movies, the arts and performance theatre.

“The submissions are also part of our work to revive theatre at an affordable cost compared to up-market theatres where entry charges, transport and refreshments costs hinder the attendance by many Alex residents. Some of our shows are for free, of comparable quality and include popcorn and all goodies associated with the theatre environment,” she advised.

Ndaba went on to say that they aimed to be an incubator and cultural hub of choice by also displaying local content and talent in poetry and dance for upcoming and professional artists keen to watch entertainment reflecting local issues.
