Arts festival at Thusong Youth Centre

JOBURG - The often solemn environment at the Thusong Youth Centre in Alexandra will come alive with comedy, poetry and foot stomping on 12 March when the centre will host the Artists Preserving Heritage festival in conjunction with the Alexandra Youth in Action Ensemble.

The artists in the lineup are expected to come mainly from Alex, with a sprinkling of other artists from Soweto, Thembisa, Diepsloot and Orange Farm, to name a few.

Among the luminaries of the creative industry to grace the festival will be theatre doyen, Dr Mbongeni Ngema, who has been bestowed with a doctorate for his contribution to the theatre and music world.

Ngema will feature in a play at the festival called Emkhathini which is written by Nhlanhla Mazibuko, and directed by Ngema and Alexandra Youth in Action Ensemble director Bongani Dlamini.

Also featured at the festival will be the plays Ayachisa Amateki and A bucket of shame. Dancers from the Thusong Youth Centre will also perform.

In addition, the Northern Ohio Regional Flute Alliance Flute Choir will perform pre-concert music at the event which is sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture. The fun affair will also include audience participation, an art exhibition, fashion, a jumping castle for children and African food for sale.

Actress Yonela Mabaleka said, “We have never had a festival like this in Alexandra with so much talent and we have put all our efforts to bring out the magic in the play, Emkhathini. It has not been easy but looking at where we are heading after the festival, I see a bright future for us as Alexandra artists working together.”
