A new South African romantic comedy to be released

JOBURG – A new South African romantic comedy is set to be released by United International Pictures (UIP) at cinemas nationwide on 18 December.

Trouvoete is an Afrikaans film directed by Darrell Roodt and it stars lead actress, Erica Wessels and actor, Bouwer Bosch. They are joined on screen by Lika Berning, Paul du Toit, Stefan Ludik, JC Snooke, Deon Coetzee, Richard van der Westhuizen, Marlee van der Merwe and Ericka Sennett.

“It’s a real love story that takes place over Christmas,” said Wessels who was joined for an interview by Bosch and Roodt at UIP in Sandton.

Ella, played by Wessels, is an introverted artist who has not been so lucky when it comes to love. She is over 30 and questions whether she will ever find someone to share her life with. Her only romantic prospect is a chat buddy, Dr Zhivago, who she chats to every day.

“It is something for everyone to enjoy,” said Bosch. “Dit is ‘n mooi fliek (it is a lovely film). People will relate, especially people who are going to be single during the holidays. It’s a warm, funny movie with a happy ending.”

Bosch added that the film was a feel-good movie and he was excited to be a part of the production. Wessels would like more people to support local movies. She said Afrikaans movies were doing extremely well in the South African film industry.

“Afrikaans filmmakers know their audience and know what they like,” added Roodt. “We have a small audience, but they’re loyal and they’re always looking for something new.” Roodt said he pushed the boundaries with this film and moved away from the typical Afrikaans movie style. “I’m happy I got to work with a lot of people I admire,” he added.

“We make a variety of films, which means there is an even greater possibility for them to be seen,” said Wessels who still has not seen Trouvoete. “I am looking forward to finally seeing it at the premiere.”

The premiere will be held at Montecasino on 30 November.
