Hotspots in Jozi

BRAAMFONTEIN – City Buzz was wandering the streets in Braamfontein when we came across Hillbrow resident, Miriam van Zyl.

She revealed that she is studying editing and sound at the local film school Afda, but she was taking a well-deserved break.

“Johannesburg is so beautiful! It is a city with personality. Also people automatically think I’m really cool for living in Johannesburg and they are right … it does make me super cool,” she laughed.

We asked her why living in Jozi was so cool – even though we already knew the answer – the ridiculous amount of cool spots to hang out at. “Personally my love for food and fear of large groups of hipsters has led me to The Sheds, a well-organized, amazing market.”

The Sheds @1Fox is a trendy spot on the western edge of Joburg in Ferreirastown. It’s got a market filled with funky stalls selling everything from stools made out of recycled bottles, art and even kids clothes. There’s also loads of tasty food stalls and a bar to quench your thirst.

Van Zyl was also kind enough to reveal her favourite spots to hang out at. “If I want to go out and drink – responsibly – there are so many options nearby … Melville, Braamfontein, Greenside. And when I want an amazing curry, and I want that often, I go to Fordsburg.

When the subject of the inner city’s rejuvenation came up, Miriam had this to say, “I think it is amazing! It has been done in other cities with markets and trendy accommodation as well as cute little coffee shops. But we mustn’t forget that there are other people living in the city, poor people. I live near Hillbrow where people are in need of massive upgrades in sewage infrastructure as well as safe and affordable public transport. Despite this I can see steps being made in the right direction, roads being fixed, buildings being renovated. Johannesburg has so much potential and I can’t wait to watch my city transform!”
